When black slaves came from Africa, are not Christians. Today, americas African-Americans may well be one of the most fervent Christians in the United States. The charismatic leaders of americas-Black Christians of Frederick Douglass and Thurgood Marshall (who preaches but not when ordained ministers) to Martin Luther Kind, Ralph Abernathy and Jesse Jackson, among others, have been finding launches of affirmative action and a greater equality for all blacks of americas. This is proof that the churches play a vital role in African American culture, not just as places of worship. They are also at the center of political, social and educational lives of black Americans. What is different about the black theology? It is “solely due to failure of religious whites to relate the gospel of Jesus for the pain of being black in a racist white society.” (Cone 1970 23) “For nearly three hundred years, enslaved houseworkers had been listening to their owners’ prayers and readings from the Bibleā¦. Were able to interpret their own inexplicable situation and give themselves reasons to stay alive.” (Proctor 1995 4) and the black slaves who were freed during and after the Civil War literally had nothing but faith to sustain. “They set their trust in God and began the journey up the road to equality.” (Proctor 1995 6)
From earliest times to the Emancipation Proclamation, Black slaves (when they are allowed to do so) venerated by their masters in teachers’ churches. Since most whites were Baptist in the South, that was the beginning of the large percentage African Americans started, and will continue to consider themselves “Southern Baptists.” While worshiping together often allows, “some Black preachers led the organisation from different churches, so they could sing their own anthems, their offer own prayers, and give expression to their feelings of sadness or joy overshadowring uninhibited by the presence of his white Masters. “(Armstrong 1979 237)
